Greek Triremes
Greek triremes were ancient warships used primarily by the Greeks from the 5th century BCE. They were sleek and fast, with three rows of oars on each side manned by skilled rowers, which gave them remarkable speed and agility in naval battles. The trireme featured a reinforced prow, often with a bronze ram, designed to disable enemy ships. This design allowed for tactical maneuvers and ramming attacks, making them crucial in battles like Salamis. Their effectiveness contributed significantly to the naval power of city-states such as Athens during the height of ancient Greek civilization.
