Greco-Turkish War

The Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922) was fought between Greece and the Ottoman Empire (later Turkey) during the process of the Ottoman Empire's decline after World War I. Greece aimed to expand into regions with Greek populations, claiming parts of Anatolia. The conflict involved military advances and setbacks on both sides, with Turkey ultimately defending its sovereignty under leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The war ended with the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, establishing Turkey's borders and leading to population exchanges to create more ethnically homogeneous nations. It was a pivotal event shaping modern Turkish and Greek national identities.
