Great Indian Peninsula Railway

The Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) was one of India’s earliest railway companies, established in 1849 to develop rail transport across western India, especially between Mumbai (then Bombay) and surrounding regions. It played a crucial role in connecting cities, facilitating trade, movement of people, and promoting economic growth during British rule. The GIPR laid the foundation for India's extensive railway network, which remains a vital part of the country’s infrastructure today. It eventually merged with other railway companies to form Indian Railways, the world's fourth-largest network, helping shape modern India’s transportation system.
