Great Grebe

The Great Grebe is a large diving waterbird found mainly in South America. It measures about 60 centimeters (24 inches) long and has striking black and white plumage with a long, pointed bill. Adapted for underwater hunting, it swims gracefully beneath the surface to catch fish, crustaceans, and insects. Its strong legs help propel it underwater, and it often dives to great depths. The Great Grebe is social, often seen in pairs or small groups, and nests close to freshwater bodies like lakes and rivers. It plays an important role in its ecosystem by helping control aquatic prey populations.
