Graft-vs-Host Disease (GVHD)
Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a condition that can occur after a stem cell or bone marrow transplant, where the donated immune cells (graft) attack the recipient's tissues and organs. This happens because the donor's immune cells recognize the recipient's body as foreign and initiate an immune response. GVHD commonly affects the skin, liver, and intestines, causing symptoms like rashes, jaundice, and diarrhea. It is a serious complication, but advances in medicine help manage and reduce its impact. Proper matching of donor and recipient and immune-suppressing treatments are critical to minimizing GVHD risk.
