Governor-General of Nigeria
The Governor-General of Nigeria was the official representative of the British monarch when Nigeria was a colonial territory, serving as the ceremonial head of state. This position existed from Nigeria's independence in 1960 until 1963, when Nigeria became a republic and the role was replaced by the President, who became the country's head of state. The Governor-General's duties included representing Nigeria internationally and performing ceremonial functions, but real political power rested with Nigeria's elected government. Today, the title no longer exists since Nigeria is a republic with a president as its head of state.
