Government of Ireland Act 1920

The Government of Ireland Act 1920 was a law passed by the UK Parliament to establish separate governments for two parts of Ireland: Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. It aimed to give each region its own parliament and some self-governance while remaining part of the United Kingdom. However, it largely failed to work as intended; Northern Ireland established its government, but Southern Ireland's Parliament was not effective, and most of Ireland moved toward independence. The act was a significant step in Ireland’s constitutional history but was ultimately superseded by later agreements leading to the Republic of Ireland and continued UK governance over Northern Ireland.
