Gotra System

The Gotra system is a traditional Hindu lineage concept that identifies a person's ancestral lineage through a common male ancestor, historically a sage. It functions as a biological and cultural classification, helping to determine permissible intermarriages within communities to avoid consanguinity. Each Gotra is associated with a specific Rishi (sage), and individuals sharing the same Gotra are considered descendants of that sage. This system also plays a role in social and religious rituals, emphasizing group identity and heritage. While rooted in ancient practices, Gotra distinctions continue to influence certain cultural and matrimonial customs in Hindu society.
