Gonzalez v. Raich
Gonzalez v. Raich was a 2005 Supreme Court case about whether the federal government can enforce federal marijuana laws in a state that has legalized medical marijuana. Angel Raich and Diane Monson used marijuana for medical reasons and argued that federal laws banning marijuana were too broad and infringe on personal rights. The Court decided that the federal government could regulate and enforce marijuana laws under the Commerce Clause because the growth and use of marijuana could impact interstate markets. Essentially, the Court upheld federal authority over state laws concerning controlled substances.
