Gonococcal conjunctivitis

Gonococcal conjunctivitis is an eye infection caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which also causes gonorrhea. It can occur when bacteria spread from the genital area to the eye, often during childbirth or through contact with infected fluids. Symptoms include redness, swelling, pus, and irritation of the eye, which can lead to serious damage if untreated. It requires prompt medical treatment with antibiotics to prevent complications such as vision loss. Good hygiene and safe sexual practices help prevent infection, and newborns are often given eye drops at birth to protect against it.
