Gomory cuts

Gomory cuts are a mathematical technique used in optimization to improve solutions for problems with many constraints, especially in integer programming where variables must be whole numbers. When solving these problems, the initial methods might yield solutions that are fractional and not practical. Gomory cuts generate additional constraints to eliminate these fractional solutions without excluding any valid integer solutions, effectively "cutting off" the non-integer options. By iteratively adding these cuts, the method refines the feasible region until an optimal, integer-valued solution is identified.
