Gold classification
The GOLD classification is a system used by healthcare professionals to assess the severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It considers symptoms, lung function tests (specifically airflow limitation measured by spirometry), and exacerbation risk (flare-ups). The system categorizes COPD into four stages: GOLD 1 (mild), GOLD 2 (moderate), GOLD 3 (severe), and GOLD 4 (very severe). This helps doctors determine the best treatment plan, monitor disease progression, and predict outcomes, ensuring patients receive appropriate care based on the severity of their condition.
