Goaltending
Goaltending, in basketball, occurs when a defensive player or the goalie (if playing hockey) illegally interferes with the ball or puck on its way to the basket or net. In basketball, it specifically refers to blocking or touching a shot attempt while the ball is on its way down, above the rim, or during its downward arc, preventing a made basket. This is considered a violation because it unfairly interrupts a scoring opportunity. The call results in the offensive team being awarded points, often a make-up for the attempted shot, emphasizing fair play and proper timing in defense.
