GNU (GNU's Not Unix)
GNU, which stands for "GNU's Not Unix," is a project initiated by Richard Stallman to create a free, open-source operating system compatible with Unix. The goal was to develop software that users can run, modify, and share without restrictions or costs. While Unix is a proprietary operating system used in many computers, GNU provides a collection of free tools and programs that form an operating system similar to Unix. When combined with the Linux kernel, GNU software creates a fully functional and freely available operating system known as GNU/Linux.
