Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey)
Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, commonly known as Pompey the Great, was a Roman military and political leader in the 1st century BCE. He gained fame for his successful military campaigns, notably in defeating pirates and expanding Rome’s territories in the Mediterranean. Pompey was part of the Roman Senate and initially allied with Julius Caesar and Crassus in the First Triumvirate, a powerful political alliance. However, his rivalry with Caesar led to conflict, culminating in civil war. Pompey was eventually defeated and murdered in Egypt in 48 BCE. He is remembered as one of Rome’s most talented generals and influential politicians.
