They serve as reference points, marked by identifiable and well-preserved fossils or unique geological features, enabling geologists to synchronize and compare rock records internationally. Essentially, GSSPs provide a standardized "timestamp" in Earth’s history, helping us understand and communicate the timing and sequence of major geological and evolutionary events accurately across different regions.
