Global Protection Against Limited Strikes (GPALS)

Global Protection Against Limited Strikes (GPALS) was a proposed U.S. missile defense initiative during the late 1980s aimed at shielding allies from limited missile attacks. It involved deploying ground and space-based systems to detect and intercept incoming missiles, especially those carrying nuclear or conventional warheads. The concept emphasized defense against smaller-scale or tactical strikes, reducing the risk of escalation and enhancing international security. Although it was never fully implemented, GPALS represented an approach to develop advanced, multi-layered missile defense capabilities to protect against regional threats without provoking an arms race.
