Global Polio Eradication Initiative
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is a worldwide effort to eliminate poliovirus, which causes paralysis. Launched in 1988, it involves governments, health organizations, and partners working together to vaccinate children, improve surveillance, and respond swiftly to outbreaks. The goal is to interrupt virus transmission everywhere, ultimately eradicating polio similar to smallpox. Success depends on high vaccination coverage, strong healthcare systems, and addressing challenges like conflict and remote areas. Through these coordinated efforts, the GPEI aims to make polio the second human disease to be globally eradicated.
