Gley Soil

Gley soil is a type of soil that forms in areas with poor drainage, often covered by water or frequently saturated. This saturation prevents oxygen from reaching the roots of plants, creating anaerobic conditions. As a result, the soil develops characteristic features like a grayish or bluish color and often has a muddy, sticky texture. Gley soils are commonly found in wetlands, floodplains, and poorly drained lowlands. They are important for certain ecosystems but can be challenging for agriculture due to their waterlogged nature. Proper management is needed to prevent issues like root rot and nutrient deficiencies.
