Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)
The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a medical tool used to assess a person's level of consciousness after a brain injury or illness. It evaluates three key responses: eye opening, verbal response, and motor response. Each category is scored from 1 to 6 for motor, 1 to 5 for verbal, and 1 to 4 for eye opening, resulting in a total score ranging from 3 (deep unconsciousness) to 15 (fully awake and alert). The GCS helps healthcare providers determine the severity of brain injury and guides treatment decisions.
