Giyanti Agreement

The Giyanti Agreement, signed in 1755, was a treaty between two main factions of the Sultanate of Mataram in Java, Indonesia. It ended a period of conflict by dividing the kingdom into two separate entities: the Yogyakarta Sultanate and the Surakarta Sunanate. This division allowed both regions to govern independently under their respective sultans, while still recognizing a nominal connection to the larger Islamic monarchy. The agreement helped maintain stability in central Java but also created lasting political boundaries that influence the region’s structure and culture today.
