Girolamo Savonarola (historical figure)

Girolamo Savonarola (1452–1498) was an Italian Dominican friar and preacher known for his fiery sermons condemning moral corruption and the excesses of Renaissance Florence. He gained influence by promoting religious reform, prophecy, and a strict moral code, leading to a brief period of theocratic rule in Florence. Savonarola opposed wealthy and secular influences, advocating for piety and spiritual renewal. However, his rigid teachings and political power eventually alienated many, and he was accused of heresy. He was executed in 1498, but his ideas influenced later reform movements and left a lasting impact on religious and cultural history.
