Girija Devi

Girija Devi (1929-2017) was a renowned Indian classical musician, celebrated for her mastery of the Thumri genre—a lyrical form of North Indian music. Hailing from the Benaras gharana (musical tradition), she blended emotive expression with intricate improvisation. Over her six-decade career, she brought Thumri to national and international prominence, inspiring many musicians and audiences. Devi received numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan, for her contribution to Indian music.
