Gill Net Fishery

A gill net fishery uses large nets that hang vertically in the water, typically made of a mesh material. Fish swim into the net and become caught by their gills, as the mesh size is designed to trap fish of certain sizes. This method allows fishermen to catch multiple fish at once without actively chasing them. Gill net fisheries can target specific species but may also impact non-target species, including marine mammals and seabirds, if not carefully managed. They are widely used worldwide but require regulation to minimize environmental impacts.
