Giles Corey
Giles Corey was a New England farmer and participant in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Accused of witchcraft, he refused to enter a plea, which under the law led to his pressing to death by being crushed with heavy stones. His steadfast refusal to defend himself was a protest against the court and the injustice of the trials. Corey’s death is notable for its brutality and his role as a symbol of resistance against wrongful accusations in a period marked by mass hysteria and legal injustice.
