Gesture and Sign Language
Gesture and sign language are methods of communication that use physical movements, primarily hand shapes, postures, and facial expressions, to convey meaning. Gestures are often informal, spontaneous movements like waving or pointing, used within spoken language. Sign language, however, is a formal, fully developed visual language with its own grammar and vocabulary, used primarily by the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. It allows for complex conversations and nuanced expression through standardized signs. Both serve to enhance communication, especially across language barriers or in situations where spoken words are limited or unavailable.
