Gesellschaft

"Gesellschaft" is a social term introduced by sociologist Ferdinand Tönnies to describe a type of society characterized by formal, individual relationships, often rooted in self-interest, contractual agreements, and urbanization. Unlike "Community" (Gemeinschaft), which relies on close-knit bonds and shared values, Gesellschaft emphasizes indirect interactions, specialization, and impersonal associations typical of modern, industrial societies. It reflects a societal structure where individuals are connected more by roles and institutions than by personal ties, functioning efficiently through legal and economic agreements rather than emotional kinship.
