Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker Syndrome (GSS)

Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker Syndrome (GSS) is a rare, inherited brain disorder caused by abnormal proteins called prions. These prions lead to progressive brain damage, affecting movement, coordination, and cognitive functions. Symptoms usually appear in middle adulthood and may include difficulty walking, speech problems, and memory loss. GSS is one of several prion diseases, which are known for being neurodegenerative and ultimately fatal. There is currently no cure for GSS, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and providing support to patients and their families.
