Germline mutation

A germline mutation is a change in the DNA that occurs in the reproductive cells—sperm or eggs. Because these cells form the blueprint for a new person, the mutation can be passed on to offspring. These mutations are present in every cell of the individual from birth and can influence traits or increase the risk of certain diseases. Unlike mutations that happen during a person's life in other body cells, germline mutations are inherited and can contribute to genetic diversity within a family or population.
