German Federal Assembly

The German Federal Assembly (Bundesversammlung) is a special body convened solely to elect the President of Germany. It consists of all Bundestag members (the federal parliament) plus an equal number of representatives from the 16 federal states (Länder), chosen by their state parliaments. The assembly convenes as needed, usually every five years, in a joint session. Its primary role is to ensure that the presidential election reflects both national and regional representation, embodying the unity of Germany’s federal structure.
