Gerardo Hernández
Gerardo Hernández is a Cuban former intelligence officer and one of the "Cuban Five," a group accused by the U.S. government of espionage related to Cuba. He was convicted in 2001 for conspiracy to commit espionage but consistently maintained his innocence, asserting he was not involved in spying. International supporters argued his trial was politically motivated. In 2015, Hernández was released from prison after serving almost 16 years, as part of a prisoner exchange. His case remains a notable example of Cold War-era tensions and issues of political imprisonment, highlighting complex dynamics between the U.S. and Cuba.
