Gerald Holtom was a British designer and artist best known for creating the peace symbol in 1958. Inspired by his desire to promote nuclear disarmament, he combined the semaphore signals for the letters "N" and "D" (standing for "Nuclear Disarmament") into a circle with two downward lines.
