
George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland
George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland (1784–1849), was a British statesman and diplomat. He served as Governor-General of India from 1836 to 1842, overseeing administration during a period of expansion and reform. Known for his conservative approach, he faced challenges such as the First Anglo-Afghan War, which ended disastrously. Prior to this, he held various government roles, including Lord Chancellor and Foreign Secretary. His leadership was marked by efforts to modernize the British Empire and manage its complexities in India. He was eventually elevated to the peerage as Earl of Auckland in recognition of his service.
