George Atzerodt
George Atzerodt was a Confederate sympathizer involved in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. He was recruited as part of John Wilkes Booth's plot but was assigned to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson. However, Atzerodt lost his nerve and failed to carry out the assassination. He was later arrested, tried, and found guilty of conspiracy to murder; he was executed alongside other conspirators. His actions were part of a broader effort to destabilize the Union government during the Civil War's final days.
