Geocities

GeoCities was an early web hosting service launched in 1994 that allowed users to create their own personal websites easily. It organized sites into virtual neighborhoods based on interests, like "Hollywood" for movie fans or "SiliconValley" for tech enthusiasts. Users could customize pages using simple tools, making it accessible for a wide audience. GeoCities played a significant role in promoting individual expression on the internet and contributed to the growth of early online communities. It was acquired by Yahoo in 1999 and shut down in 2009, but it helped lay the groundwork for modern personal and community websites.
