"Gentlemen" and "Players" are traditional terms used in cricket to distinguish two social groups of players. "Gentlemen" refers to amateur cricketers, often from the upper classes, who played for enjoyment and status. "Players" denotes professional cricketers, who earned their living from the game, typically from working-class backgrounds.
