Genetics of Protein S deficiency

Protein S deficiency is a genetic condition where the body produces insufficient or abnormal Protein S, a protein that helps control blood clotting. Without enough functional Protein S, blood clots can form more easily, increasing the risk of conditions like deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. This deficiency is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, meaning only one copy of the altered gene can cause the disorder. It can also occur due to acquired factors such as certain medical conditions or medications. Diagnosis involves blood tests, and management may include blood thinners to prevent clot formation.
