General Sani Abacha
General Sani Abacha was a Nigerian military officer who became the country's military ruler from 1993 to 1998 after taking power in a coup. His leadership was marked by authoritarian rule, suppression of political opposition, and allegations of corruption. Despite some modernization efforts, his regime faced widespread criticism for human rights abuses and financial misconduct. Abacha’s time in power ended when he died suddenly in 1998. His leadership remains controversial, as he is remembered both for his firm control and the allegations of illegal enrichment during his rule.
