General Post Office (UK)
The General Post Office (GPO) was the UK's main postal service organization, established in the 19th century to manage mail delivery, telecommunications, and related services. It operated as a government department responsible for ensuring communication infrastructure across the country, including postal delivery, telephone networks, and telegraph services. The GPO played a crucial role in connecting people and businesses, supporting communication and commerce. In the 1960s and 70s, its telecommunications functions were gradually separated into a new entity, British Telecom. Today, the GPO as a government body no longer exists, but its legacy continues in the UK's postal and telecom services.
