General MIDI

General MIDI (GM) is a standardized system for digital musical instruments and software that ensures consistent playback of musical sounds across devices. It assigns specific sounds, or instrument voices, to numbered "programs," so when a song specifies a certain instrument, any GM-compatible device will produce a similar sound. This standardization allows musicians and producers to share and reproduce compositions reliably, regardless of the hardware or software used, making collaboration and performance more seamless.
