Gendai Shūkyō

Gendai Shūkyō, or "modern religions" in Japan, refers to new religious movements that emerged from the late 19th century onward. These groups often blend traditional Buddhist, Shinto, or Christian elements with unique teachings or practices, and they frequently address contemporary social issues or personal spiritual needs. Unlike mainstream religions with long histories, gendai shūkyō are characterized by innovative philosophies, charismatic leadership, and dynamic community activities. They reflect Japan’s response to modernization, urbanization, and changing cultural values, offering diverse spiritual options and sometimes sparking debates about their social roles and influence.
