GDR Constitution
The GDR (German Democratic Republic) Constitution, established in 1949, was the founding legal framework for East Germany. It outlined the structure of government, emphasizing socialist principles, state control, and the leading role of the Socialist Unity Party. It granted rights like education and employment but also emphasized duty to the state and socialism, often limiting personal freedoms. The Constitution aimed to create a socialist society through centralized planning and party dominance, reflecting the broader political context of East Germany during the Cold War. It remained in force until reunification in 1990, when Germany adopted a new, unified constitution.
