GDR Border Troops

The GDR Border Troops were a specialized military force of East Germany responsible for guarding and controlling its borders, especially the Berlin Wall. Established to prevent unauthorized crossings and to maintain East Germany’s sovereignty, they monitored border crossings, employed fencing, surveillance, and patrols, and used force if necessary. Their role was central to East Germany’s efforts to restrict movement and maintain political stability during the Cold War. The Border Troops operated under the Ministry of National Defense and were distinct from the regular army, reflecting the importance East Germany placed on border security.
