Gavrilo Princip

Gavrilo Princip was a Bosnian Serb nationalist best known for assassinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria on June 28, 1914. This act is often cited as the spark that ignited World War I. Princip was part of a group called the Black Hand, which sought to promote Serbian nationalism. His assassination of the archduke, who was heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, led to a series of political tensions and alliances being activated, ultimately resulting in the war. Princip was arrested and, due to his age, served a short prison sentence until his death in 1920.
