Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST)
Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs) are rare tumors that originate in the digestive tract, most often in the stomach or small intestine. They develop from cells called interstitial cells of Cajal, which are involved in regulating gut movement. GISTs can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, bleeding, or intestinal blockage. Treatment often involves surgical removal and may include targeted therapy with medications, especially if the tumor is malignant. Early detection is important for better outcomes, and ongoing research aims to improve understanding and treatment of these tumors.
