gastrointestinal anatomy

The gastrointestinal (GI) system is responsible for digesting food and absorbing nutrients. It starts at the mouth, where food is chewed and mixed with saliva, then travels down the esophagus to the stomach, which breaks down food with acids and enzymes. From there, it moves into the small intestine, where most nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream. The remaining waste moves into the large intestine, which absorbs water and forms stool. Finally, waste exits the body through the rectum and anus. This system involves organs working together to convert food into energy and nutrients essential for the body.
