Gastric Atrophy
Gastric atrophy is a condition where the stomach lining gradually loses its healthy cells, leading to thinning and reduced function. This process can diminish the stomach's ability to produce important substances like stomach acid and digestive enzymes, which are essential for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. Over time, gastric atrophy can increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies and may be associated with conditions like chronic gastritis or an increased chance of developing stomach cancer. It often develops slowly and may cause few symptoms initially but can lead to issues like indigestion and malnutrition if left untreated.
