Garifuna people

The Garifuna are a multicultural people of African, Carib, and Arawak descent, primarily living along the Caribbean coasts of Central America—Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Originating from shipwrecked Africans and indigenous Carib and Arawak peoples in the 17th century, they developed a unique culture blending African, indigenous, and European influences. They are known for their rich traditions, music (like punta), dance, language (Garifuna language), and vibrant community practices. The Garifuna community emphasizes cultural preservation and resilience, maintaining their heritage despite historical challenges and displacement.
