
Gaozu (Li Yuan)
Gaozu, also known as Li Yuan, was the founder and first emperor of the Tang Dynasty in China (618–907 CE). Prior to becoming emperor, he was a prominent military leader and a nobleman. He rose to power by overthrowing the previous Sui Dynasty after a period of chaos and internal conflict. As emperor, Gaozu established effective governance, promoted cultural development, and laid the foundation for a prosperous, centralized empire that became one of China's greatest dynasties. His reign marked the start of a golden age characterized by stability, economic growth, and cultural flourishing.
