Gallipoli (Gelibolu)

Gallipoli, or Gelibolu, is a peninsula in Turkey that was the site of a significant military campaign during World War I (1915-1916). Allied forces aimed to secure a strategic route to Russia and knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war by capturing the Ottoman-controlled Dardanelles Strait. The campaign involved intense land and sea battles, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. Ultimately, the Allies failed to achieve their objectives and withdrew. Gallipoli is remembered for its profound human sacrifice and is a symbol of national identity for Turkey, Australia, and New Zealand, commemorating those who fought and died there.
